Astrological Tattoos: 4 of Our Favorite Designs

When designing your next tattoo, it can be difficult to think of something that’s going to be personal, unique, aesthetic, and iconic enough not to look too trendy in a year. At Mad Rabbit, we think that astrology can be an incredibly meaningful and personal way to express oneself and a great place to start when putting together a tattoo idea.

For those fascinated by the stars and the movements of celestial bodies, astrological tattoos can be the perfect way to wear that fascination on your skin. Whether you're looking for something subtle and understated or bold and eye-catching, there's sure to be a design that speaks to you.

Here, we've put together a guide to some of our favorite astrological tattoo designs.

1. Zodiac Signs

One of the most popular types of astrological tattoos is the 12 zodiac signs. You can thank the ancient Babylonians for putting together the horoscope of symbols that we know and follow today.

Whether you're an Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, or Pisces, you can show your pride in your sign by getting a tattoo of its symbol. These tattoos can be simple and minimalistic or more elaborate and decorative, depending on your personal style.

Here are some small ideas we like for each individual sign:

Capricorn

Capricorns, the rarest of all zodiac signs, are known for their ambitious and responsible nature. They are practical, disciplined, and hardworking individuals who strive for success in all aspects of their lives. A design with a mountain range or a mountain goat representing the ambition and stability this sign is associated with is a great place to start!

Aquarius

For an Aquarius tattoo, a classic option is to feature an image of the water bearer, often depicted as a person pouring water from a vessel. This could be a realistic or more abstract depiction, with water droplets or splashes incorporated into the design.

To identify Aquarius' innovative and progressive nature, you might have the water being poured onto an image of the world.

Pisces

The visual symbol for Pisces is a fish, reflecting creativity, intuition, and fluidity. This image can go many different directions stylistically, from a koi jumping out of the water to an American traditional piece.

We like the American traditional style, using two goldfish in a bowl to create a classic with a twist.

Aries

Traditional, black and white realism, new school — a ram's head can look pretty sweet no matter your art style. Aries symbolizes strength, courage, and leadership, so getting something bold is definitely a must. A fire sign, consider working some flames into your design to add even more symbolism to your piece!

Taurus

It might be a bit on the nose, but a desert bull's skull is always a classic design. You can get it by itself or add more desert elements like the sun or cactus to represent determination, stubbornness, and stability.

Gemini

Gemini is typically conveyed as two opposite sides making one whole piece, giving you a lot to work with. Two halves of a face showing different emotions, small matching sun/moon tattoos, a devil and angel wing completing each other — it’s the balance of the two opposites that represent Gemini’s strength.

Cancer

The symbol of the crab demonstrates a Cancer sign’s ability to walk between the external and internal feelings of the world, the material and the emotional. You don’t necessarily need to get a large crab unless you want to; we think it would be pretty sweet to get a half ocean, half beach image with just a small crab hidden in the design.

This keeps your tattoo visually interesting while hiding the actual meaning for those who truly know you.

Leo

Most people will jump right to the lion face tattoo for Leos, and there’s nothing wrong with that because lion tattoos are awesome. However, if you want something a bit more unique, we love the design of a king of hearts playing card with a lion's head instead of the human king.

This blends the king of the jungle theme with the lion symbolism and captures Leo’s unique, dramatic flare.

Virgo

For a Virgo design, try to blend the different themes and qualities that make Virgos special. They’re a practical, logical, perfectionist sign while also being in touch with nature and the spirits.

The goddess of wheat is a great place to start; a design in which she’s looking down in front of a glowing sun or wheat crops would be a unique and powerful piece.

Libra

The Libra is represented by a scale, either by itself or being held up. Often depicted holding up two perfectly balanced yet opposite images, the scale is a piece that looks great when simplified.

Having the sun and the moon on each scale is a great look that doesn’t take much detail to stand out.

Scorpio

The most populated of all of the signs, Scorpios are passionate and intense (usually in a good way), so definitely go strong with your tattoo. The scorpion is classic, American traditional imagery already, so it definitely would fit the style.

If that’s a bit too heavy metal for your tastes, a fine-line style scorpion also looks amazing and can be small enough to fit just about anywhere. And remember that smaller tattoos heal faster than bigger ones, so if you’re in a time crunch, it may suit you better to go that route anyway!

Sagittarius

The traditional greek icon for Sagittarius is a centaur holding a fully drawn bow and arrow, which is already a badass design. However, if you want something a bit more unique, look to include Sagittarius’ other attributes that make them special, like their fiery and adventurous energy.

A flaming bow and arrow is a great way to include multiple traits of Sagittarius and can look awesome in just about any style you can imagine.

2. Constellations

Constellation tattoos are a popular astrological tattoo design that many people love for their unique and awe-inspiring look. These tattoos are perfect for those who love astrology, astronomy, or just want a design that is out of this world.

The best part about constellation tattoos is that they can represent different zodiac signs, stars, and even constellations depending on you personally. There are many different ways to design a constellation tattoo, and the possibilities are endless.

Some people prefer a small, minimalist design that features a few stars, while others opt for a larger, more detailed tattoo that covers their entire arm or back. To create a more elaborate design, some constellation tattoos are combined with other elements, such as the moon, planets, or other celestial bodies.

3. Planetary Symbols

For those interested in the movements and positions of the planets, planetary symbol tattoos can be a meaningful and personalized way to represent your astrological interests.

Planetary symbols are graphical symbols used in astrology and astronomy to represent the solar system's planets.

Each planet has its own unique symbol, which is used to represent the planet in various astrological charts and diagrams. The most commonly recognized planetary symbols are those for the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, although there are also symbols for Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Planetary symbols are often used in astrology to represent each planet's energy and influence. They can also be used in artwork, jewelry, and other decorative items for those interested in astrology and astronomy.

Whether you choose the symbol for your ruling planet, the planets that are prominent in your natal chart, or just the symbols for your favorite planets, these tattoos are sure to be unique and meaningful for years to come when taken care of with high-quality skin products.

4. Astrological Charts

For truly dedicated astrology fans, astrological chart tattoos can be an incredibly detailed and intricate way to show your love for the stars. Getting an astrological chart tattoo would be a cool and meaningful way to celebrate your birthday and astrological sign.

An astrological chart, also known as a birth chart or natal chart, is a map of the planets when you are born. It is used to interpret your unique astrological makeup, including your zodiac sign, rising sign, and various other planetary placements and aspects.

A tattoo of your astrological chart would be a unique and personal way to represent your individuality and connection to the universe. The tattoo could include the specific placement of the planets and symbols used in astrological charts, creating a beautiful and complex design that is unique to you.

For example, a tattoo of a Sagittarius astrological chart might feature a circle with various symbols representing the positions of the sun, moon, and planets at the moment of birth. The Sagittarius zodiac symbol could be featured prominently in the center of the design, with other symbols and lines connecting to indicate the placement of other planets and astrological houses.

To Wrap it Up

Astrological tattoos are a fascinating way to express your love for the cosmos and the mystery of the stars. There are endless possibilities for astrological tattoo designs, from minimalist constellation tattoos to intricate and detailed astrological chart tattoos.

No matter what your sign is, there is an astrological tattoo that can represent your unique personality and individuality. By getting an astrological tattoo, you are making a statement about your place in the universe and your connection to the greater cosmos.

We hope this article has inspired you to consider getting an astrological tattoo of your own, and that you have enjoyed exploring some of our favorite astrological tattoo designs.
